Since it is getting close to Halloween, I thought I would share an article that was recently published in Child magazine. It is a wonderfully informative article about the "new" food allergy status of children in our nation. Our family has more than one multi-food allergic residents in it. As the little one goes off to school, we are facing new challenges and learning a few new tricks (some the hard way unfortunately). If you do not have any experience with a food allergy, or have preconceived notions about whether or not food allergies actually exist(or if they are really dangerous) I urge you to read this article. Heck, I urge you to read it anyway, no matter what you think!

Earlier in the month, I was in the wedding of my very best friend (from waaaaay back). I shipped my gear to myself, hopped a plane and had an amazing weekend sharing in her festivities! My darling H made a stunning bride, and there was not even a hint of Bridezilla lurking beneath her flawless exterior :)

I was comissioned to photograph the "before" time, and once I had my dress on I declared myself off the clock! I did enjoy watching her "real" photographer work though :)

This was a fantastic wedding, and I hope that H & A had an amazing honeymoon and have made it back safe and sound. Thank you H for letting me take part in your beautiful day; you were gorgeous and I love you!

This past weekend I shot the most amazing baby shower. Gabriella of Partytopia did an amazing job with the theme. The pink and green are some of my favorite colors, and I just love them together. Holiday Deadlines! Keep this in mind when booking your session! You need to leave enough time for me to do my work and you to still have time to order! Like the image says; you are MORE than welcome to order past the deadline. I just cannot guarantee them in time for holidays (but they very well may be in with plenty of time).

And last but not least, a *special* and a little preview! Here's the holiday special for 2008. The card you see is one of my new cards for this season! Next week I'll have the whole collection up on the website to view. Cute stuff! Just updating the calendar! I will be back tomorrow with holday info and specials, and later this week with the new holiday cards for this year!

I know that it is hard to start thinking about the holidays as summer vacations seemed to have just begun, but I urge you to get a jump on those sessions you've been wanting. Fall slots fill up fast, and suppliers get busy! In order to keep you cool, calm and collected, book those sessions now and get a head start addressing those holiday cards (kidding-sort of!).

Warm weather makes perfect holiday portraits, or any-time portraits as well. Don't forget; sessions do not have to take place outside! This fall I currently have 10 slots remaining!

Boy do I have some exciting things in store for the next few months!

First on my list! I'm so happy to bring you these fantastic (and affordable) photo bags. There's a ton of shapes and sizes to choose from, and even a couple that could be unisex (dad's need cool photo gear too).

Yippee! Who doesn't love a contest!

Here's the scoop:
I love capturing memories for you in photographs. It is extremely rewarding and touching, not to mention just plain fun! Some of my most favorite memories are from summer evenings.

I grew up in "cow country" so to speak, on the edge of the main county near a bunch of farms. I can still remember the taste of fresh veggies right from our garden, days in our swimming pool (green hair!) and my fondest memories of campfires by the pond. I remember them almost every weekend...even if they were less frequent than that, time runs together in a childhood mind. The adults would sip their beverages, and the kiddies would roast marshmallows and eat smores, climb trees, swing and chat in the treehouse until the mosquitoes and black flies ate us alive. Ah, summer...

Contest rules are as follows: EMAIL me your favorite summer memory (doesn't have to be childhood). Also send me your favorite picture from any summer and a short description of why it speaks to you. Entrants MUST be signed up for the newsletter (to the right) to qualify.

Deadline is July 10. I will post the winner's memory and photo on the blog! Encourage your friends to enter too! The winner will recieve a discounted session and print credit!

I got to photograph these 5 fun chickas again this past weekend. Let's just say I was ready for a nap when I was finished! Hat's off to mom :) We got some fantastic images of them as a group! Fun fun! On a random note, I think I've finally figured out who is who (no small feat for someone who doesn't see them more than once in a blue moon!)

We tried to recreate this image. None of the babies were crazy about that idea, so we got this (so cute!)...

Hey Look! It's Us!

A bit embarassing, but we had not had a family photo taken since the birth of my daughter...er, almost 2 years ago! So we caught up with the sweet Aimee Bickers from Pure Expressions Photography to have us a little session. I had a quick minute last night to finally browse the CD, and edited one of my most favorite images of the 3 of us. I thought I'd share it with you all!

In general, I think that a lot of people don't understand why people are drawn to custom photography. It's an experience...a total package. Your final prints are something to be truly treasured, and that reflect your family; the personalities, the quirks, those special moments, and those unique things that only you see (like that soft side to your "tough guy").

But why does it have to be so expensive? There is certainly an answer! It is summed up perfectly by a talented "colleague" (I put that term in quotes because I have not met her, nor is she local, but I know her work from forums and photography related groups that I frequent. Her name is Marianne Drenth of Marmalade Photoraphy She wrote a compelling bit to educate her clients (and the rest of the internet!) on why custom photography is just that. I love new stuff! This is a really great flip book for baby and belly sessions. Maternity on one side, newborn on the other. In a perfect size with a soft cover. This preview is "unfinished" because this little babe hasn't made his or her appearance yet (soon though, and I can't wait!). I just wanted to show it off...I lurve it!

Grabbed my old camera (a Rebel XT) yesterday to capture the beautiful blue skies and fluffy clouds! Used the "dreaded" kit lens just because it was handy and easy. All taken at ISO 100 varying shutter speeds and focal lengths (17-28mm I think).

Because I can take pictures for my own enjoyment too! :) This fence at my mom's house is so cool. I had a vision in my head for this shot, and it looks pretty close! The only thing that would have made it perfect is turning fall leaves. Maybe in another couple of weeks we'll try again (wink, wink!). And MAYBE it'll be cool enough for a sweater...and jeans! How fall-ish! Go figure!

This one has a special treatment on it. Called a tilt shift (which is a band of selective focus on a special lens) and it also has some texture added to it...makes it kind of look like a painting!

Holiday Deadlines

I know that in the "real" world (ie, not the photography world!) you all will not need to start thinking about the Holidays until after Halloween. However, this is the busiest time for many photographers, and the labs that serve them.

In order to have your order guaranteed by Christmas, your session MUST be completed by the 17th of November, with orders filed by the 30th of November. I have just a handful of sessions left within that timeframe! So if you've been dragging your feet thinking about sessions to give as gifts, drag no more!

Have you ever seen an image, or collection of images (or I suppose, pair of shoes, or purse!) that just makes you stop, take a breath and say WOW.

This past week was the wedding of weddings in the photography world. I happened to stumble across some images from both of the ladies who shot the wedding of Gary Fong and to say the least, I was captivated. They are simply stunning, moving and inspiring! Almost makes me want to shoot weddings...almost.

But that's not where my heart lies. My passion is for the kiddos and their families. I love producing images that make you say "Oh! THAT is my baby! That is exactly how he is!" I love capturing your love, your joy, your happiness, your sparkle.

So my answer for those who ask me, "Why don't you shoot weddings? You could make so much money?" I have my answer, "because I love what I do".

And that's all that matters.

Hey all! I have NOT fallen off the face of the earth! ;)

I have been hard at work to bring you some new and exciting eye candy!

Coming soon are some new products (albums, coffee table books, GORGEOUS Christmas and other cards, etc.) and a new/additional blog to show them all to you!

Also new will be Collections, to make your purchasing choices easier! A la carte will still be offered, but you won't have to wonder where to start :)

While in NY, I had the chance to photograph two gorgeous and fun girlies today! I got some great ones of the two of them together. They play so wonderfully together, that is about all I got! These are some of my favorites of each little lady alone. Look out, mom and dad, the boys will be knocking!

We had a session today for the little Miss M with her lovely parents at one of the most beautiful parks that I had never been to before! It is Fletcher Park in downtown Raleigh, right around the corner from my old haunts. Who knew!

Little Miss M was very good considering how hot it was (I know I was grumpy). Here's one of my favorites from what I've proofed so far (her parents are so photogenic!).

This week had an extra special delivery from my wonderful UPS lady...my new body! (Ha, that sounds quite funny!) I had a mini-mini-shoot with my dd before my hubby went to work one morning, and here are the results. Definately not the best to be had from this wonderful camera, but I love 'em...must be the mommy goggles!

These were all taken with my 50mm 1.8 (L glass is next on my list), ISO 160, varying shutter speeds...WIDE OPEN! :) (my favorite place to be he he).

Mommy set up the shot, and daddy clicked the shutter :)

BUBBLES! The bubble machine is a wonderful invention (just not in high grass)

This is so fun! I love having something new to blog about :)

I am to list 5 of my favorite things:

1. My hubby and baby E.
2. My family (including my fur babies).
3. Photography and all things photography related (I could seriously look at other photog's sites all day long).
4. Good food (yes, I LOVE to eat, and especially fresh, local things...mmm strawberries!)
5. Warm breezes on perfect summer nights (like last night) and "window weather" :)

Officially Branded

Whew! What a week! I have now officially "branded" my business. Which means, I have done all the legwork, and have brochures, new cards, packaging, etc etc etc! And it all matches and is super fabulous (if I do say so myself!). A few more things to work on and I'm golden. I am about to get an upgrade to the 5d baby! I made up my mind :) Just need to wait for B&H to reopen... I will be back before friday with June's special (I completely missed may...sorry!). Oh, and if you're looking at logos/card designs, give Erica's page a looksee...she was wonderful to work with, and I LOVE my stuff!

If I even have visitors anymore, please forgive my absence! I have been so incredibly busy lately! Good I know, but bad for the poor little blog :)

New news! I have a new logo (yes, again). I wasn't happy with the squares I designed. The lovely Erica Hernandez whipped up one for me, and I lurrrrve it. I have also been hard at work designing new welcome packets, and updating the website (and other boring business related stuff).

Just one for now of my daughter's 9 month shots. She is SO fast (doesn't hold still for a second) that I didn't capture what I had in mind, but she is so darn cute...and I can do reshoots at my leisure :) I'll post more when I'm done proofing client sessions. Oh, and I *officially* don't like the "save for web" feature in photoshop...or maybe I'm doing it wrong. This is not grainy at all in real life!

I photographed this gorgeous couple this weekend. I love the grain in this image (I tend to like grainier b/w anyway). I know her right side is hot (their left sides were melting with the lit fireplace!), but I really love this image, and hope they will too! So M & M, here's your sneak peek! :)

Here's my new favorite "thing" shot (my old favorite was an old bean poler (farm equipment) abstract taken with my ancient minolta film camera (no longer with me...gosh was that thing heavy!).

You remember back in grade school...tag, you're it! Same thing, but blog style. I've been tagged, so I've got to share 5 "weird" things about myself!

1. I have to sleep on the side of the bed closest to the door, and I like to sleep with the door open. I also have to have some sort of covers on, even if it is hot out.

2. I drink my coffee (hot or cold) with a straw :)

3. I loathe the sound of chewing (like my hubby crunching grapes right now in my ear)...it just drives me nuts! Of course I make noise when I chew, but I can't hear myself!

4. I like my neighbors (really!) We have a great n'hood, with friendly, fun neighbors who like any excuse to throw a party.

5. I eat my veggies first. One of those weird holdovers from childhood. I always ate them first to get it over with. I actually like veggies now, so it isn't because I don't want to eat them anymore, it is just habit!

I think I'm pretty normal, but normal is relative :) He hehehe. Now it is my turn to tag someone!

Oh, and in case you're all wondering (because I KNOW you are) here's a snapshot of me that my DH took...so this (hence the flash and out of focus-ness) is what I look like.

To Stand or Not to Stand

I posted these on the personal side of things, so forgive me if you've already seen them! DD is learning to stand, and I shot these of her cute little self the other day. Looking at them again they'd make a great storyboard ;)

Project: Dress

Inspired by a photographer in Chicago, and my own idea for a mother's day gift, I have assigned myself a project!

My mom gave me a dress that was hers when she was a baby shortly after my E was born. It is really a sweet dress, sort of a sheer fabric with little nubs on it, and a pink underlayer. I need to get some more details from my gram as to how it originated, but I think it is handmade. I'd like to make a slideshow of sorts of other babies wearing this dress, spiked with their own personalities, and place it in with the original photo from the 1950's (oy, sorry mom!).

This is my wee one! Personally, I think she is too darn cute. I'm just slightly biased! Like many parents, I too often don't take the time to photograph her doing the everyday things (Hey, I may be a photographer, but I'm also human!). She was actually chasing the kitty here, practicing her new crawling skills. I'm not crazy about photobucket's sharpening (makes pictures look grainy) but it makes life so much easier. Enjoy!
